Museum of Indian Musical Instruments

One of the key activities of the academy is preservation of Indian musical instruments used by exponents of classical and folk music. These instruments are not only used as accompaniments to vocal music but played solo or in orchestra in Indian classical and folk music.

The Rajeev Goenka Academy Museum of Indian Musical Instruments, which currently houses a collection of 34 instruments, was inaugurated on 23 August 2008 by Shri. Jayant Kastuar, Secretary, Sangeet Natak Academy, India’s national academy for music, dance and drama. The murals of the haveli, which houses the museum, the wooden and brass work on the pillars and the ornate gates dating back to the previous century are wonderfully preserved and lend themselves beautifully to the ambience.

The process of enriching the collection is continually on - the focus being on Rajasthani musical instruments as a part of the Academy’s endeavour to revive and preserve the musical heritage of Rajasthan.
